Fonte
de Benémola
A gem of a valley. Botanically rich and a good place to find orchids.
Tucked away in a fold of the hills, spring comes early and throughout
the year freshwater flows through lush banks. Birds are plentiful but
mostly expected species. Dunnocks winter by the cultivated patches and
Ring Ouzels and Blue Rock Thrushes occur. The valley is situated 2 km
west of Querença (an attractive village) and most easily reached
by turning east at the traffic lights on the Loulé - Salir road.
Park by the signboard at the start of the trail, about 500 m after the
bridge over the pretty ribeira da Fonte Menalva. Follow the unsealed track
along the west bank (diverting as fancy demands) to picnic tables and
a gorge. Here, after rainy weather, the emerging, underground stream forms
a bubbling cauldron (a natural jacuzzi), known as A Fonte de Benémola.
Continue up the gorge to the rim and two caves that look out across a
plain to Rocha da Pena. Return to the stream and if the water is not too
high, cross and follow the track back down the east bank. Stop en route
at the friendly cesteiro's (basket weaver) cottage to chat and look at
his traditional wares. The circular walk is easy and about 4½ km
long.
