Bird watching
Lagoa dos Salgados

This substantial and attractive freshwater lake is unique in the Algarve and is undoubtedly one of the most important sites for wildlife. Unprotected but the official use of euro funds to improve birdwatching and interpretation facilities is a positive sign.

Situated 18 km west of Albufeira, this excellent site comprises the vast open area immediately behind Praia Grande beach and adjoining Salgado golf course. Both beach and golf course are well signposted and easily accessible from the N 125. No visit would be complete without checking the surrounding drier areas, the dunes and the mouth of the ribeira de Alcantarilha.

Important breeding species are Little Bittern, Little Egret, Purple Heron, Gadwall, Shoveler, Ferruginous Duck (only site in Portugal), Purple Swamp-hen, Black-winged Stilt, Avocet, Little Ringed Plover and Kentish Plover. Other wetland species regularly seen are Little Grebe, Black-necked Grebe, Grey Heron, Squacco Heron, Eurasian Spoonbill, Greater Flamingo, Water Rail, Moorhen and Eurasian Coot. A good place to seek out waders, especially those that prefer freshwater margins, such as Northern Lapwing, Wood Sandpiper, Green Sandpiper, Ruff and Temminck's Stint. Summer visitors include Collared Pratincole, Little Tern, Red-necked Nightjar and Yellow Wagtail. Common Buzzard, Marsh, Montagu's and Hen Harriers are regulars and recent rarities have included Glossy Ibis, African Spoonbill, Lesser Scaup (first for continental Portugal) and Long-billed Dowitcher.
