Bird watching
Quinta de Marim

The headquarters of the Ria Formosa reserve - primarily an information, interpretation and environmental education centre. A worthwhile nature trail covers a good range of habitats. It also visits an old tidal mill, an archaeological site, a bird recovery centre, Portuguese water dog kennels and even the poet João Lúcio's house. There is a small entrance charge (ask for a nature trail map), which is a very worthwhile contribution. Refreshments are available in the centre.

Quinta Marim is down a well-signposted turn-off from the N 125 about 1 km east of Olhão. There is ample parking inside but remember to stop and pay the fee at the gate. A word of warning, this is not an early morning site as the opening hours follow office hours but it is open seven days a week. Purple Swamp-hens have been introduced to a small freshwater lake.
