Sítio Classificado da Rocha da Pena

Everything in miniature. If Quinta do Ludo is the Algarve's Coto Doñana, then Rocha da Pena is the Algarve's Table Mountain. Spectacular to look at, panoramic views from the top, good variety of flowers and birds, deep dark caves, an unbelievable Neolithic wall and a well-marked 5 km trail. To get there, drive north from Loulé to Salir and turn west on the N 124 towards Alte. After 1 km, turn right at Taipa and shortly left on a minor road to the hamlet of Rocha (signposted Rocha da Pena). Park the car, pick up a pamphlet (and have a bica) at the friendly café and begin the trail right there. The pamphlet mentions Bonelli's Eagles, Eagle Owls and various mammals but do not expect to see them. Thermals over the escarpment attract birds of prey and occasionally Ring Ouzels and Alpine Accentors occur on the cliffs. There is a representative population of smaller birds, including breeding Dartford and Subalpine Warblers. Blue Rock Thrushes breed on the cliff face and Rufous-tailed Rock Thrush occurs on passage. Butterflies are interesting and include Large Tortoiseshell and Marsh Fritillary. An excellent locality to seek out the less common wildflowers of the hills, such as the beautiful peony Rosa Albardeira Paeonia broteroi flowers along the trail.
